Punting is a popular tourist attraction in Christchurch. It happens on the Avon River and is as entertaining to passersby as it is to participants. Peaceful…Walking the tranquil path along the river toward the botanical garden was the helpful suggestion of a volunteer tourist assistant who we encountered after exiting the shuttle bus that transported us from the ship. Every port in New Zealand offered this service, but some folks were more knowledgeable and enthusiastic. 🤩 We were all set to take a more direct, less scenic path prior to our encounter. It pays to stop, ask questions and listen when exploring a new destination.

What’s in bloom depends on the time of year, but we were fortunate to catch the end of the season for roses, and dahlias at their height.

Christchurch Botanical Gardens covers more than 50 acres. We managed to see a small portion in our short time allotment – the downside of cruising. Even so, we had a satisfying day and enjoyed our time here with the Celebrity Edge.

We visited Christchurch a second time with the Norwegian Spirit, but had a less inspiring day. We decided to take care of a few necessary purchases on this dreary, rainy day and since Woolworth is the most reliable “everything” store in NZ we dusted that task off quickly.
Determined to try a meat pie before leaving the city, we popped into the riverside marketplace for the popular lunch sandwich?? Pie?? Whatever it’s called, we loved it. Shame on me for not showing the inside of this handheld delight. The buttery, flaky buns were chock full of shredded beef in a thick gravy. Yum! Add a cold beer and the disappointment of a rainy day fades.

Until next time…
Lovely photos and great commentary, Suzanne. I especially loved the flower close-ups.

Terry, thanks for following this series of posts and for your kind comments. Christchurch was a fun stop. We just docked in Honolulu this morning and I am looking forward to more beautiful scenes and flowers. It’s coming to an end all to quickly.

Dan, the meat pie was messy, but delicious. Thanks for dropping by.

Punting in New Zealand is a strange notion to me, Suzanne. I’m so used to associating it with Cambridge in the UK xx

Suzanne,
I have read all your posts from February forward, and so glad I did. From the “Honey Shack” to the Dahlias you kept me entertained and more than a tad envious. Your Canon does not disappoint–I love the pic of Casita Mita. The Geothermal Valley reminds me of Yellowstone and its fascinating mud pods and geysers. Fiorland is fascinating. I look forward to more in the future. Hope y’all are doing well on your journey…enjoy. BTW…those hot pink compression socks are “the bomb!” Joe
