Arriving in Auckland a few days ahead of our cruise was a good idea that has rewarded us many times over.
Six hours from Ft Lauderdale to San Francisco, followed by a thirteen hour flight from San Francisco to Auckland took a toll on my feet, despite wearing my favorite hot pink compression socks.

We arrived at the airport and took a ride share directly to the ferry terminal. There, we purchased walk-on tickets to Waiheke Island. Forty minutes later, we checked into the Oyster Inn where we collapsed for a few hours.
Later, a short stroll around Oneroa Village unveiled the allure of this quintessential beach town. Pristine beaches, wineries, walking trails, parks, eateries, and efficient public transportation make it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway or a longer stay.

Day 2
We took the local bus (50A) to Onetangi Beach, where we enjoyed a breezy walk on the sand followed by a more challenging incline walk to Casita Mira, a Spanish inspired winery, with an eclectic setting.

Day 3
We walked from the village to Mudbrick Winery, enjoying panoramic views of the island along the way. This winery is elegant and sophisticated, boasting several event venues with unparalleled backdrops.

Waiheke, with its walkable villages and picturesque landscapes welcomed us to New Zealand in the best way possible.

A few more parting shots as summer fades…and we move on.

This sounds and looks (and tastes) like the perfect welcome to New Zealand. Enjoy your cruises!

New Zealand is on our radar for a possible trip next year, so I’ll remember Waiheke and consider a stay there it looks very much our sort of place 🙂

Nice to know you are in our southern corner of the world! I have not been to this vineyard region. It looks lovely and I like that it is walkable. Plus, I recognise some features that unmistakenly say, ‘New Zealand’like the giant tree ferns. Enjoy!

Did you get to explore the city itself, and the waterfront? Very enjoyable…

Yes, we had a full day there and will have 2 more at the end of our time in NZ. Loved the tower views. Great city. Good food. Waiheke was pretty special. I’d go back there in a minute.
