Black Plus Something Extra – CFFC

This week Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge (Hosted by Dan Antoin at No Facilities) asked us to present ‘Black and…’ (fill in the blank). I searched my archives and selected a few oldies you might recognize from the past, and a few I have never posted here.

I rarely shoot in black and white and prefer to create B/W images in post-processing. Some photographs are naturally black and white but beg to be tweaked, so of course I do.

The three images above are naturally black and white but have additional color. White is the dominant color in each of these three images, but by enhancing the black background each subject appears to float.

I used a preset to soften this portrait of my daughter that highlights her flawless complexion against the contrast of the black dress. The blurred background is intentional as is the muted coloration of the rocks and moss.

These two images were shot in color and changed to black and white in post-processing. I punched up the highlights in both photographs.

I shot this image of Malcolm (one of my favorites) on my iPhone in Portrait mode using Stage Lighting.

This is the iconic Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart, Florida. Black and gold. I intensified the black sky in post-processing, but everything else was as seen through the lens.

This photo challenge ends today, but Dan hosts weekly Monday – Sunday. For information on how to participate, visit his blog here. For upcoming challenges, visit his page here.

  1. I always enjoy your photos Suzanne – I’ve never been one for taking pictures, but I keep thinking I should try to do it more and yours always gives me a little prod in the right direction. The contrasts of some and the mellowness of others were really interesting to see.
